In January 2022, Gunn confirmed that John Murphy, the composer of Vol. 3 's initial production time in 2019, before several production delays. The special was originally supposed to be shot during Vol. A day of filming in Los Angeles had been expected by early January 2022, but did not occur due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant. Henry Braham serves as cinematographer, after doing so for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 began on November 8, 2021, with production on the film expected to last until April 2022. It will be filmed under the working title Poptart. The special will be filmed in early 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia, during the later portion of production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special sees Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff all reprising their roles from the films as Guardians of the Galaxy members Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket, Nebula, and Mantis, respectively. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be around 40 minutes long. In June, Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the MCU, said Feige was excited about a planned story for Groot to return to his home Planet X. Gunn noted there were parts of the special that would help set up material in Vol. The main cast members of the Guardians films are featured, with the story set between Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. Gunn finished the script in April 2021 after initially writing the treatment "years ago". Gunn added that the special would be live-action and canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and noted that he had been a fan of the Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) as a child. Gunn said it was "one of my favorite stories ever", with a story "as crazy and fun as can be" that he had "bugged endlessly about over the years". In December 2020, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a new television special featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy to be written and directed by James Gunn, the writer and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
